Cinema has come a long way, from silent black-and-white classics to today’s CGI-packed blockbusters. While visuals and effects have reached new heights, the plot and acting can somewhat be below par. Still, every year brings a handful of films that remind us of the power of great stories and performances. I’ve researched the cast, directors, and buzz to highlight ten films that stand out from the crowd.
Whether you’re craving an easy-going comedy, well-written dramas, or action-packed adrenaline, these upcoming 2025 releases promise something extraordinary. Here’s my curated list of 2025’s most anticipated movies:
1. You’re Cordially Invited (January 30)
Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell team up for what might be the rom-com of the year. When their children accidentally book the same wedding venue on the same day, the two families decide to share the space—leading to outrageous chaos and hilarity. Packed with Witherspoon’s charm and Ferrell’s comedic genius, this one will bring all the laughs, heart, and probably a few wedding disasters. I have particularly picked this movie to explore Will Ferell’s further acting prowess.
2. Mickey 17 (March 7)
What happens when you can’t die—but can remember every time you’ve been killed? Bong Joon Ho’s post-Parasite” project takes Robert Pattinson into the icy unknown, as an “expendable” who is sent to colonise a dangerous new planet. Equal parts sci-fi thriller and character study, it’s destined to be as thought-provoking as it is visually stunning. I chose this movie specifically to see how Robert’s acting compares, especially since the last time I saw him was in Batman, where he really did a great job.
3. Sinners (April 18)
The vampire genre gets a dark, historical twist, courtesy of Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler. Set in 1930s Jim Crow-era Louisiana, this atmospheric thriller follows twin brothers returning to their hometown, only to face far more than the ghosts of their past. With Coogler’s directorial flair and Jordan’s commanding performance, “Sinners” will be a gothic masterpiece. I chose this movie because the plot intrigued me, and the cast seemed equally compelling.
4. Ballerina (June 6)
The “John Wick” cinematic universe grows richer with Ana de Armas taking center stage as Eve Macarro, an assassin raised within the shadowy tradition of Ruska Roma. Featuring iconic names like Anjelica Huston and the late Lance Reddick, “Ballerina” promises action, drama, and raw performances wrapped in sleek choreography. I am a big fan of Baba Yaga and I would like to see how Ana takes on the role of a ruthless assassin.
5. F1 (June 27)
Fast, furious, and dripping with adrenaline—this F1 drama will fuel every racing fan’s dream. Directed by Joseph Kosinski and starring Brad Pitt, the story follows a retired champion driver staging a daring comeback after years of solitude. Prepare to feel every hairpin turn and engine roar on-screen. I have always loved movies about racing such as Rush, Ford vs Ferrari and Brad never fails to deliver through his acting. I am sure this will be one movie to look out for.
6. Superman (July 11)
James Gunn brings a fresh take on the Man of Steel with “Superman.” David Corenswet dons the iconic cape, while Rachel Brosnahan takes on Lois Lane. The plot pivots around Superman’s search for his Kryptonian roots, but don’t worry—it’s not all brooding. Gunn’s knack for blending heart and humour guarantees this will be a crowd-pleaser (plus, we finally get to meet Krypto the Superdog!). Whilst I understand, that this is James Gunn’s view of kickstarting DC with a fresh start, the trailer does look like an old rip-off from the Man of Steel starring Henry Cavil with the addition of Kryto thrown in the mix. I hope this movie is not a disappointment, in the sense, that it has the same storyline and we could have had a different plot storyline with Cavil and Amy instead.
7. Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery (TBA)
Benoit Blanc is back, and he’s taking on his most high-stakes case yet. Rian Johnson returns with an all-star ensemble that includes Josh O’Connor, Mila Kunis, and Kerry Washington. We don’t know much, but if history serves, this third “Knives Out” instalment will be a rollercoaster of wit, suspense, and jaw-dropping twists.
8. Materialists (TBA)
Dakota Johnson and Pedro Pascal as a couple navigating love and chaos? Yes, please. Directed by Celine Song, “Materialists” intertwines themes of relationships, matchmaking, and self-destruction in a storyline as volatile as it is fascinating. This magnetic pair is sure to bring depth and intensity to the screen. I am hoping to revive Pedro’s good choices in movies after a disappointing Gladiator.
9. Avatar: Fire and Ash (December 19)
The saga continues. James Cameron unveils the next chapter in the “Avatar” series, introducing the Ash People—an entirely new race bound to shake up Pandora’s fragile harmony. With spectacular visuals and themes of change and conflict, “Avatar 3” aims to be a cinematic event of epic proportions.
10. The Housemaid (December 25)
A psychological thriller for the ages, “The Housemaid” stars Sydney Sweeney as Millie, a young woman whose fresh start as a live-in maid spirals into something far darker. Based on Freida McFadden’s novel, the film weaves a web of suspense and secrets between its characters. A chilling Christmas treat for fans of Hitchcockian tension.
